Episode Transcript

Host: Hey everybody. Welcome to the Tom Rowland podcast brought to you by Starbrite. Today we have a great conversation with someone who goes by MajorGator95, he's Major Thornton. Major Thornton is a fisherman who also has quite a footprint on social media, and he's a real fisherman — he's done the professional redfish tournament circuit and is a very good fisherman. We're going to have a lot of good conversation about what gets people started in fishing, what keeps them interested, and where we are with social media. Major: My name is Major Gator and this is the Tom Rowland Podcast. Host: You're a natural, you should have your own podcast. Major: It's crazy that I don't think I can do a podcast, man. Because I would say I'm an introvert with social skills. I can be talkative, but in my day to day I'm not a man of many words. Host: A lot of times people come out of their shell in a creative way — if you put a camera in front of you, you can do it, right? Is that what happens with you and social media? Major: Oh, for sure. That's like my way of expressing myself, you know what I mean? It definitely is like that. Host: How did you get comfortable in front of the camera if you say you're an introvert in most of your life? Major: For me, when I lived in Gainesville for 10 years and then moved to Charlotte — Charlotte is not like Florida, man, as far as fishing goes. So when I first got there I was depressed really. My granddad had passed not too long before I moved up there. And then you get to a new area, you're not finding as many fish, you've got to go through so many trips of not catching anything to find fish. And man, if I'm not fishing, I'm a different person, I just love fishing so much. I had to find a way to really bring that joy back to fishing for me, and that's where it kind of all started. That was my outlet. Host: How did you start fishing — were you in Gainesville first, is that where you grew up? Major: I'm from south Florida. I was born in Belle Glade, and I lived in Clewiston for a little bit too, but I'm from around the lake. Host: Right on. So when you grew up, was that a major part of your fishing, like the lake? Major: Oh yeah, but honestly the best fishing you can do as far as bass fishing is you fish those dirt roads, those canals that lead up to the lake — there's so many paths that lead up to it. I can take you to some spots right now down some dirt roads where on a bad day we can catch two dozen fish.
