Tom Rowland Podcast Episode 169 is my conversation with Captain Jeff Maggio, the Lunker Dog, a tarpon guide and YouTube personality who has turned fishing community into something real. I caught up with Jeff the morning after his LunkerCon event, which drew three to four hundred people and raised money for CCA and Captains For Clean Water. We talk about why he built LunkerCon, what he means by the Reel Guy Network, and why helping other people is the thread running through everything he does.

Jeff Maggio, known as the Lunker Dog, is a tarpon fishing guide and YouTube fishing personality. He founded LunkerCon, an annual fishing community event, and built the Reel Guy Network, a community of anglers who help one another. He has appeared on the Tom Rowland Podcast before.
LunkerCon is a fishing community event Jeff Maggio created and has run for years. The gathering brings the fishing community together to meet, swap information, and support good causes. The year Tom attended, it drew roughly three to four hundred people and benefited CCA and Captains For Clean Water.
The Reel Guy Network is Jeff Maggio's term for the community of anglers who help each other find places to fish, places to stay, and genuinely care whether things work out. Jeff describes how a single post can surface trusted local information within minutes because people in the network look out for one another.
Jeff traces it back to being a team player his whole life, in fishing and in sports, where doing your job well helped everybody else. He says that philosophy is part of his DNA, and it shows up in how he runs LunkerCon, makes sure kids and junior anglers feel included, and uses his platform to lift others.

I went to LunkerCon this year and had a great time meeting a lot of you in person, so I wanted to catch up with Jeff and find out exactly what this thing is, why he started it, and where it is going. What struck me is that Jeff keeps coming back to helping, helping anglers, helping kids, helping causes. He used the proceeds from this year's event for CCA and Captains For Clean Water, two organizations I think very highly of. That spirit is what I wanted listeners to hear.

What I take away from Jeff is that he measures success by who he helped, not by who he beat. LunkerCon and the Reel Guy Network are both built on that idea, and it is contagious.
