Destiny is where your character leads you — the final link in the chain that runs from your thoughts to your words, your actions, your habits, and your character. This Physical Friday concludes my six-part Master Your Thoughts series. Today I explain why two boats leaving the same port a couple of degrees apart end up in completely different places, why that is exactly how small daily choices compound over a lifetime, and how each of us actually controls our own destiny.

It is the final link in the progression: thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, and character determines your destiny. Who you are — honest or not, a hard worker or not, a quitter or not — compounds over years and decides where your life ends up. Your destiny is not handed to you; it is steered by your character.
Picture two boats leaving the same port on what looks like the same course, but a couple of degrees apart. For a while they run side by side, then they diverge, then they are out of sight of each other, and far enough out they end up in completely different places. Small changes in your thoughts, words, actions, and habits work the same way: invisible tomorrow, massive over ten or twenty years.
Yes, and that is the conclusion of this whole series. If thoughts turn into words, words into actions, actions into habits, habits into character, and character determines destiny, then each of us controls our own destiny, and it all starts with the thoughts you choose. Decide what you want — to be a fishing guide, win a tournament, lose 50 pounds — and plant those intentional thoughts first.
We are all going to have negative thoughts — doubt, frustration, anger. You cannot fully prevent them, but you can be aware of them and choose whether to give them power by speaking them or acting on them. How much and how often you give negative thoughts power has big implications for the rest of your life, and that may matter even more than thinking positive.
It is a series of monthly physical challenges I ran for the year, starting with twenty minutes of exercise for twenty days in a row in January, ramping up each month with more varied challenges, most lasting about a month. If you take part, use the hashtag TRPphysicalchallenge on Instagram, where you can follow me at tom_rowland and track my progress on every challenge.
Here is the full chain I walk through in this episode, from chosen thought to long-term destiny.
I walk through each of these in the episode. Press play in the player above.
Imagine two boats at a tournament starting line taking off on what looks like exactly the same course, but a couple of degrees apart. For a while they run side by side. Then they diverge, then they lose sight of each other, and far enough out they arrive at two very different places. That is the whole series in one picture — small things in your mind making massive changes over time. I tell the full version in the episode, so press play above.
Not quite, and I push back on the pie-in-the-sky version in this episode. Thinking positive works sometimes, but the negative side may be more important: we are all going to have negative thoughts, and the real question is how much power you choose to give them. I did a lot of research on this series and tested it against my own life, both directions. Hear the honest conclusion in the player above.
If every link in the chain holds — thoughts to words to actions to habits to character to destiny — then it is easy to see how each of us controls our own destiny and can create the life we want. It starts with intentional thoughts: I want to be a fishing guide, I want to win a tournament, I want to lose 50 pounds. I walk through how to plant them in the episode above.
With this series concluded, we are getting back to workouts, and we are launching the monthly physical challenges. January was twenty minutes of exercise for twenty days in a row, February ramps up, and the challenges get more varied all year. Follow along with the hashtag TRPphysicalchallenge on Instagram, where I am at tom_rowland and doing every challenge myself. Details in the player above.
