Electrolyte replenishment means replacing the sodium and minerals you sweat out, and it is the one supplement I actually pay attention to. Someone asked what kind of supplements I take, and the honest answer is very few. What I do supplement are my electrolytes, because fishing every day in the summer heat — paired with hard training and sauna use — means sweating excessively. In this Physical Friday I explain how I rehydrate with plain water plus an electrolyte capsule instead of sugary sports drinks.

Very few. I do not take many supplements at all. The one thing I pay attention to and actually supplement is my electrolytes, because long days fishing in the heat plus training mean excessive sweating. Everything else I try to get from real food and plain water.
When you are fishing every single day for a long period of time, especially in the summer, you are sweating excessively. As you lose that sweat you lose sodium and minerals, and plain water alone does not put them back. When you pair fishing in the heat with working out in the heat, and maybe sauna use as well, you really need to pay attention to electrolytes or your energy, focus, and performance drop.
They work — you will get electrolytes through Gatorade — but you are also getting a lot of sugary stuff that may not be so good for you. If a sugary sports drink is okay with you, fine. My preference is to skip the sugar and get the electrolytes another way.
I rehydrate with plain water and then take an electrolyte supplement in capsule form. The one I mention in the episode is Endurolytes, made by Hammer. I drink plain water, take the electrolyte pill, and keep my levels where I feel great — no sugar involved.
Two by name: Hammer Endurolytes, a capsule of electrolytes you take with plain water, and Drip Drop, another electrolyte replacement option. Any quality product in that category accomplishes the same goal — replacing what you sweat out without the sugar load of a sports drink.
You feel a whole lot better through the day, you have better workouts, and you are able to concentrate and pay more attention when you are fishing. Dialed-in electrolytes are one of the simplest performance upgrades available to anyone who works or plays outside in the heat.
Here is the simple routine I describe in the episode.
People expect a long stack of pills and powders, and the truth is the opposite. I keep it simple, and the one thing I refuse to neglect is electrolytes. There is a reason that one earns a spot when almost nothing else does, and it comes down to what a guide's summer actually looks like — day after day of sweating on the bow. I explain my thinking in the episode, so press play above.
Plain water is the right starting point, but on a heavy-sweat day water alone does not replace what you are losing. That gap is where the afternoon fade, the headache, and the loss of focus come from. The fix costs almost nothing and takes seconds. I walk through exactly how I handle it in the episode — press play above.
You do not need a complicated supplement protocol to perform well on the water. You need water, real food, and attention to your electrolytes when the heat is on.
Make sure you are taking care of your electrolytes and you are going to feel a whole lot better through the day, have better workouts, and pay more attention when you are fishing. Press play above to hear the full breakdown.
