Brian Latimer is an FLW Pro Bass Fisherman who left a successful landscaping business to chase professional fishing full-time starting in 2004, and won an FLW tournament in March 2019 after years of stopping and starting to make the career work. Brian studied sports psychology to handle the mental side of competition, drawing lessons from people who had far worse circumstances than his own and still achieved great things.
Brian grew up in a fishing family; his father competed in bass fishing and Brian came along in the 1980s, saying he does not remember a time he wasn't fishing. After graduating from a technical college with a horticulture degree, he ran a successful landscaping business, then bought his own boat and began chasing a full-time fishing career starting in 2004.
Brian won an FLW tournament, posting on Instagram in March 2019 that he had won and promising to reply to as many texts, calls, and comments as he could that week.
Brian began researching sports psychology and the mental approach used by people who excel in any kind of sport. He noticed that many of the people who had the biggest impact in sports were dealing with circumstances far worse than his own, which reframed how he thought about his own situation.
Brian had an associate degree in horticulture and owned a successful landscaping business before deciding, after some soul-searching, to pursue professional fishing full-time.

Brian told me it would take longer than an hour to tell his whole story of getting into fishing, and I believe it, given he grew up in a fishing family in the 1980s and cannot remember a time he wasn't fishing. What made me want this conversation was watching him actually win an FLW tournament after years of starting and stopping while he figured out if the career would work, and I wanted to hear how he got through that.
