Episode 119 of the Tom Rowland Podcast is my conversation with Chris Bush, founder of The Speckled Truth, a conservation platform devoted to trophy speckled trout. Chris is an active-duty Air Force member who turned a deep love of one fish into a movement built on a simple idea: take what you need and release the rest. We talk about his pursuit of trophy trout, how he built The Speckled Truth through genuinely good writing and storytelling, and why the experience of the chase matters as much as the catch.

Chris Bush is the founder of The Speckled Truth and an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force. He is a dedicated angler who fishes almost exclusively for trophy speckled trout and is known for high-quality outdoor writing that brings the experience of the pursuit to life. He joined the military after 9/11 and credits the Air Force with moving his family to coastal areas that fed his fishing passion.
The Speckled Truth is a conservation platform Chris Bush created around the resource of trophy speckled trout. He describes it less as a movement and more as an ideology of taking care of a resource he loves. Its simple message is take what you need and release the rest, and it focuses on capturing the angling experience, developing as an angler, and growing as a sportsman.
The core message is take what you need and release the rest. Chris pushes that idea through The Speckled Truth's articles and social media, emphasizing the health of the trophy trout resource over filling a cooler. The mission centers on capturing the experience of targeting these fish, developing as an angler, and creating a culture of conservation among sportsmen.
Chris says the Air Force has been good to him and his family, in part because it moved them to different bases and coastal areas where he could keep pursuing speckled trout. He joined after 9/11 wanting to serve, earned his commission as a lieutenant, and that path actually became the spark behind The Speckled Truth.
Tom singled out the quality of Chris's writing right away. Instead of dry, how-to tactics pages, Chris writes stories, weaving the tactics, techniques, and passion for the sport into narratives about the experience. That storytelling approach is a big part of what sets The Speckled Truth apart from typical fishing and hunting content.

One of the first things that stood out to me about Chris was the quality of his writing. A lot of fishing and hunting content is just tactics, very how-to centered. Chris writes stories, and he brings the tactics and the passion for the sport into those stories. That is hard to do, and he does it well. Add in that he is an active-duty Air Force member who built a real conservation platform around one fish, and I knew this would be a conversation worth having. I wanted to know where the writing came from and where The Speckled Truth was headed.

Chris fishes almost exclusively for trophy speckled trout, and he is the first to admit it is close to an obsession. He explains what it is about that particular animal that draws so much out of you, not just as an angler but as a person. For him, everything else in fishing is secondary. Listen to him describe the pull of that fish.
This is the heart of The Speckled Truth. Chris has repeated the message almost to the point of exhaustion, and he means it, because the trophy trout resource depends on it. He talks about how he pushes that conservation ethic through his articles and social media without lecturing. Hear how he frames it in the episode.
Chris joined the Air Force after 9/11 wanting to serve, and the military ended up feeding his fishing life by stationing his family near the water. He explains how that path actually sparked The Speckled Truth. Press play in the YouTube player above to hear how the two careers braided together.
I asked Chris straight out where the writing came from, whether he was always good at it or whether the work made him good. His answer, and his approach to telling fishing stories instead of dumping tactics, is one of my favorite parts of this conversation. Listen to that section of the episode.

What I respect about Chris is that he built something that is bigger than catching fish. The Speckled Truth is a conservation ethic dressed up in really good storytelling, and that combination is rare.
He is serving his country, raising a family, and still finding a way to protect a fishery he loves and bring other anglers along with him. That is the whole point. Listen to the whole conversation.
