Episode 73 of the Tom Rowland Podcast is my conversation with my friend Josh Cash, a true Irishman who came to America, married an American, and recently went through the full process of getting his green card. Josh is someone I work out with, train with, and talk to all the time. When he started telling me the story of his immigration journey, I found it fascinating, not as a political statement, but as a genuinely interesting look at what it takes for someone from Ireland to come here, work, and build a life.

Josh Cash is an Irishman who moved to the United States, married an American, and went through the legal process of obtaining his green card. He is a close friend and training partner of Tom's. Josh was the first person in his family to finish high school and go to college, and a big part of his motivation now is showing his nieces, nephews, and cousins back home that there are more options in life than what they grew up seeing.
This episode is Josh Cash's firsthand account of legal immigration, from coming to America from Ireland and marrying an American to navigating the green card process. Tom is clear that it is not a political statement about immigration, but a personal story about what someone from another country actually has to do to live and work in the United States, told by a friend Tom knows and trusts.
Josh walks Tom through a process that even Tom admits he did not fully understand at first. With immigration so prominent in the news, hearing the actual steps from someone who lived them, the paperwork, the waiting, and the requirements, made it concrete and human rather than abstract. The full account is in the episode.
Tom makes a point of saying he is not bringing the conversation to the podcast to make any political statement about immigration. He simply found Josh's story interesting because he knows, likes, and trusts Josh, and wanted to understand the human side of a process that dominates the headlines.
Josh grew up in a family where his dad never worked and no one had graduated high school, with sisters who both work in a bar. He became the first in his family to finish high school and go to college. He was also born with a hole in his eardrum and has only about seven percent hearing in one ear.

Josh is somebody I work out with, train with, and talk to a lot. He started telling me the story of getting his green card and I just thought it was fascinating. I want to be clear: I am not bringing this to the podcast to make any kind of political statement about immigration. I simply thought it was a really interesting story about what someone from Ireland actually has to do to come to this country and work and live here. With immigration in the news so much, hearing it from someone I know, like, and trust felt valuable. I hope you find it as interesting as I did.

With immigration dominating the news, it is easy to lose the human being inside the headlines. Josh is my friend, and his story put a real face on a process most of us only argue about in the abstract. Press play in the YouTube player above to hear why it stuck with me.
Beyond the green card, Josh and I get into life, training, and the small things, like the fact that we are both half deaf in one ear and keep turning our good side toward each other. It is a warm, funny, and human conversation. Listen to that section of the episode.

What I took away from talking to Josh is how much determination it takes to leave everything you know and build a life somewhere new, legally and from scratch.
He did the work, followed the path, and is now trying to show the next generation of his family what is possible. That is a story worth hearing, no matter what you think about the politics. Listen to the whole conversation.
