A drop in is visiting another gym while you travel, paying a small fee, and joining a class, and it is the single best way I know to keep your fitness from going off the rails on the road. Travel knocks people off a great schedule, then the diet slips, the sleep slips, and it can take weeks to recover. For this Physical Friday I walk through exactly how to drop in at a CrossFit gym or any other gym while traveling, including the etiquette that makes it easy.

A drop in is when a traveler visits a gym that is not their home gym, usually pays a small fee, and joins a regular class. CrossFit affiliates are built for it, most charge around ten to twenty dollars or ask you to buy a t-shirt, and some welcome visitors for free. It lets you keep training on the road, meet new people, and see how other gyms run their communities.
Do your research and find a gym near your hotel, then make contact before you arrive. Email or call and say which class you would like to attend, mention your experience level, and ask if that works for them. When the day comes, arrive at least thirty minutes early, fill out the waiver, introduce yourself to the coach, and pay the drop-in fee. From there the coach usually introduces you to the class and you are off.
In my experience most CrossFit gyms charge about ten dollars, sometimes twenty, and many offer the option to buy a t-shirt instead, which supports the gym. Some gyms have no drop-in fee at all and just welcome you in. Either way it is a small price for a coached workout and a chance to experience a new community while you travel.
Because it removes all the surprises. Reaching out ahead of time gives the gym a chance to confirm the class time, tell you the fee, and steer you toward a beginner session if that fits better. It is also simple courtesy, you are a guest in their space. If you cannot make contact, you can still show up, just check the schedule online and arrive extra early to handle paperwork.
You leave home on a great schedule, training, eating, and sleeping well, and the trip brings it all to a halt. The exercise stops, the diet goes off the rails, sleep gets out of whack, and hydration slips. Then it can take a couple of weeks to get back on track, and by then it may be time for another trip. Planning workouts into your travel, like a drop in, breaks that cycle.
Plenty. Hotel room and parking lot workouts that need zero equipment work anywhere, and groups like F3, which is in dozens of states and most major cities, hold free early morning workouts you can join. Gyms like Orangetheory also allow drop ins. The point is the same in every case, travel does not have to be the end of your training.
