Episode Show Notes

Quick Update: Appearances, News & New Content is a first-person update episode where Tom Rowland catches listeners up on a new studio, an expanding podcast network, and where the show is airing next, because between the podcast, the TV show, and social media, keeping everyone in the loop about where new content lives had become its own challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Waypoint Outdoor Collective?

It is a network of outdoor podcasters that Waypoint TV built after growing to more than 70 video producers. Tom's show became part of the collective alongside podcasts like Fish Strong and Off Grid. It does not replace any existing way to find the Tom Rowland Podcast, it simply adds one more destination, searchable on iTunes as Waypoint Outdoor Collective.

Where can I watch Saltwater Experience episodes before they air on TV?

New Saltwater Experience episodes go up on Waypoint TV first, ahead of their broadcast dates on the TV networks, so viewers who do not want to wait can watch the newest shows on the Saltwater Experience channel there.

What TV networks air Saltwater Experience?

The show airs on Florida SunSports, on the Sportsman's Channel fifty-two weeks a year, and on NBC Sports. Tom also announced a new deal to begin airing on the Discovery Channel starting in the second quarter of that year, which he called the largest network the show had been on.

Where can listeners meet Tom Rowland in person?

At the Miami Boat Show, mainly at the Yellowfin, Mercury, and Lowrance booths. Tom also mentioned holding informal group workouts some mornings during the show, announced ahead of time on his Instagram.

How do I suggest a guest for the Tom Rowland Podcast?

Email podcast@saltwaterexperience.com or send a message on Instagram. Tom said many of the guests booked around that time came directly from listener suggestions sent to that inbox.

Why I Wanted to Do an Update Show

I was producing so much content between the podcast, the TV show, and social media that I realized even I was having trouble keeping track of where everything lived, let alone asking you to keep up with it. So instead of assuming everybody already knew what was going on, I decided to just sit down and tell you directly: new studio, new network, new TV deal, and what is coming next.

A New Studio and a Growing Podcast Network

I built a small room covered in acoustic foam so I have a consistent place to record How 2 Tuesdays and interviews without always needing to be on location. Around the same time, Waypoint TV invited the show to join the Waypoint Outdoor Collective, a network built the same way they grew their video side, by bringing together podcasts with a similar audience. I talk through what that means for how you find the show, and it is worth hearing directly since there is a lot of nuance in what changes and what stays exactly the same.

Where the Show Is Headed on TV

Saltwater Experience keeps its home on Florida SunSports and the Sportsman's Channel, plus NBC Sports, but the news I was most excited about was a new deal to start airing on the Discovery Channel. I get into why that deal matters for the show's reach, plus a rundown of the guests already recorded for the year, including a fighter I have admired since I was young. Press play above to hear the full list.

Final Thoughts From Me

This kind of update show is not something I plan to do every week, but when there is this much going on, I would rather just tell you directly than have you stumble onto it. Thank you for listening and for sending in guest suggestions. This show would not be what it is without them.

EP 79 | Quick Update: Appearances, News & New Content

Hey, everybody. Welcome to something new for this week. This is an update show. Even with social media, websites, email list, everything else, I'm creating so much content right now that it's hard to tell everybody about it. Like, where is it? Where do you find it? What's going on? Alright, so here's what's gonna happen. I'm just gonna tell you all the cool things that are going on for this week, and if we continue to have lots of things like this, I'll continue to do this little update show.

But first update, I built a new studio. It's not much, but it is pretty cool. I think it offers a very consistent sound. It's a small room that's covered in acoustic foam, got some cool tables. So looking forward to that. Got a place now that we can do podcasts if we need to. Don't always have to be on location. I'll continue to go meet with people, but there's a cool place where I can do the How To Tuesdays and stuff like this anytime I want.

The next thing is that coming up pretty soon, I think on Valentine's Day weekend, is the Miami Boat Show. I will be at the Miami Boat Show this year. I have not been going to the Miami Boat Show for the last few years because it has been right on the weekend that the state wrestling tournament has happened. As you may know, I have two boys that were wrestlers in high school, and the state tournament is what everybody lives for. So as my boys worked their tails off all year long to make it to this one tournament, I had to be there. So I'm sorry I've missed you at the Miami Boat Show the last few years, but I will be there this year, and I would love to meet you. Rich will be there too. Both of us will be in the Yellowfin booth mostly, the Mercury booth, and the Lowrance booth. Stop by the Yellowfin booth, that's our home base at the Miami Boat Show. I think I'll also be holding workouts in the morning, probably Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning of the boat show. Watch for my social media and I'll tell you the time and place, that's tom_rowland on Instagram.

This podcast has been incredibly successful, and I really am having a great time, and it's all thanks to you guys. Waypoint TV has started to move into the podcast space, and they invited me to be part of the Waypoint Outdoor Collective. It's a network of podcasters, and they bring together like minded people that have similar podcasts. You can subscribe to the Waypoint Outdoor Collective and get a new show every day. On the two of them I've had the pleasure of having on this podcast, one being Fish Strong, which is Joe Simonds and his brother Luke, and Will Taylor also has a new podcast, part of the Waypoint Outdoor Collective, along with Off Grid, a hunting podcast. This will not change anything about how you find this podcast, it will not replace anything, it's just adding one more destination.

All of our 2019 shows are being edited for broadcast on the networks, and we have been delivering them to Waypoint TV. We filmed an entire season, we have one more to film, and I'm getting ready to leave to go to Hawks Cay and film one more show for the 2019 season. This season we've gotten some of our best shows ever, including Matt Hughes, nine-time world welterweight champion, my favorite fighter of all time. Got an opportunity to fish with him and find out how he's recovering from his interaction with a real live train. Right now we have five shows on Waypoint TV. As far as the networks go, we're gonna be on Sun Sports as we always have been, still on the Sportsman's Channel fifty-two weeks a year, and we have our largest platforms, NBC Sports. And then the big news for this year is that we are going to be on Discovery Channel in the second quarter of the year. We're extremely excited about that, I think it's gonna help grow our audience and put us out in front of some other people. This is maybe the largest network we've ever been on.

Our social media, I've got a full time team working on it, and we're putting even more focus toward it, going back through our content and finding a lot of cool stuff that did not make it onto the show and behind the scenes kind of stuff. Instagram is my favorite, but we're on Facebook and Twitter as well. If you want to follow me personally, that's at tom_rowland.

As for the podcast, there's so much cool stuff coming up. I did two podcasts with Captains for Clean Water, learned a ton about what's going on in the state of Florida with a new governor and what that means for water quality. I have another one coming out with Chris Whitman, Benny Blanco, and a scientist from the Everglades Foundation. I got one with Bouncer Smith. I got one with my friend Layne Norton, who has a PhD in nutrition and was a powerlifting and bodybuilding champion. I also talked to Rob Chapman, who owns Outdoors 360, about the impact of social media on the outdoors. Miles Burghoff, host of Sweetwater Television, came in and was the first to do a podcast in the new studio. Russell Kleppinger caught 814 tarpon last year, that one's this week's episode. And I also did one with Jessica "Dixie" Mills, a triple crowner who hiked the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail start to finish, about 8,000 miles of hiking.

With the Miami Boat Show coming up, I have ten podcasts scheduled in and around it, with some really good guests I don't want to announce yet. So many of these guests have come to me from your own emails at podcast@saltwaterexperience.com. If you've got other guests, hit me up on social media or send an email and let me know if there's somebody you want me to track down.

This has been an incredibly busy week. I don't know that we're gonna do this update show every week, but I wanted you to know where all this new stuff is going and what's in the pipeline. Thank you to each and every one of you that's listening and cares about what we're putting out there. Until next week, you can subscribe to the Waypoint Collective, meet us at the Miami Boat Show, subscribe to this podcast, and check out our new shows on Waypoint.
