Episode Show Notes

This conversation with Peter Miller — three-time World Sailfish Champion, host of Bass 2 Billfish and the new Discovery Channel show Uncharted Waters — covers one of the most unusual paths into professional fishing I have ever heard. Peter went from male modeling in Milan and Tokyo to wrapping a 53-foot Viking in sponsor logos before anyone in the billfish world had seen anything like it. I sat down with him at his apartment in Miami to talk about how he built it all and what keeps it running.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Peter Miller?

Peter Miller is a three-time World Sailfish Champion and the host of two fishing television shows — Bass 2 Billfish and the Discovery Channel series Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller. Before entering the fishing industry full-time, Peter worked as a professional male model for over twenty years, booking international campaigns in Japan, Italy, and across South and Central America. He grew up in New York, attended the University of Miami, and is based in Miami, Florida.

How did Peter Miller go from male modeling to professional fishing?

Peter fished obsessively from the time he was a child and used his modeling income to fund his fishing habit — buying bait, fuel, and marina storage for his boat. He competed in billfish tournaments throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, winning the World Sailfish Championship in 2003 and again in 2007. The tournament success, combined with the sales and marketing skills he developed in the modeling world, gave him the foundation to build sponsorships and eventually launch his own television show.

What is Peter Miller's new show Uncharted Waters about?

Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller is a Discovery Channel series focused on international travel, fishing, food, and cultural exploration. The first episodes were filmed in Guatemala at Pacific Fins, where Peter's crew shot sailfish on fly, giant mahi, and yellowfin tuna with cinematic Sony cameras and a dedicated slow-motion operator. The show airs on Discovery Channel on Sunday mornings at 8:30 AM and reaches 96 million households.

How did Peter Miller get sponsors for his fishing team?

Peter built a binder of newspaper clippings, photos, and tournament footage going back to the early 1990s — long before anyone else on the billfish circuit was thinking about marketing materials. He used that binder and his salesmanship to land his first sponsors, starting with shirts and gear, then working up to paid deals. He was the first person in the sport fishing world to wrap a boat in sponsor logos, and he designed team shirts with logos placed high on the chest so they would not be blocked by oversized checks on the awards stage.

What advice does Peter Miller give about building a career in the outdoor industry?

Peter emphasizes that being the best fisherman is not enough. He says sustaining a career in the outdoor industry requires sales ability, people skills, social media knowledge, content creation, and the willingness to grind through sixteen-hour days. He tells young people to pair their creative skills with business education, which is exactly what he advised his own son to do at USC.

Why I Wanted Peter On the Show

I have met a lot of people in this industry over twenty years, and Peter Miller might be the only one who came into professional fishing through the ranks of professional male modeling. That alone made me want to have him on. I am always interested in people who have taken an unusual path and made it work, especially when the path involves real salesmanship and hustle rather than just being the most talented person in the room.

Peter is also someone I relate to on a personal level. We are the same age — we both just turned fifty. We both have kids at similar stages. We both produce television shows and deal with the grind of social media and sponsor management every single day. I wanted to hear how he thinks about all of it, and I was not disappointed. From Zoolander to the Sailfish Tournament Circuit

Peter's modeling career started because a girl he knew from the University of Miami told him to try it. He showed up to the agency in a three-piece suit with a briefcase because that is what he wore to his printing company job. He booked his first two castings almost immediately and was making more on a weekend shoot than he earned in months at the office. The story of how he went from that first callback to twenty years of international campaigns — while fishing five to seven days a week on the side — is one I would not do justice trying to summarize here. Listen to how he tells it.

The First Wrapped Sport Fish in Tournament History

Peter did something in the early 2000s that nobody in the billfish world had ever seen. He wrapped his 53-foot Viking in sponsor logos, put the whole team in matching branded shirts, and told his guys to hold the winner's checks above their heads instead of in front of their chests. The other teams thought he was out of his mind. There is a reason behind every single detail he chose — where the logos sat on the shirt, which sponsor got the top position, why the checks went up instead of down. Peter walks through the whole system in the episode. Watch that section in the YouTube player at the top of this page.

Why Being the Best Fisherman Is Not Enough

This part of the conversation hit close to home for me. Peter and I ended up talking about something I read in Tim Ferriss's book Tools of Titans — the idea that being the best in the world at one thing is not enough unless you can pair it with another skill. Peter is a living example. He is not the best fisherman. He told me that directly. He is not the best host. He said that too. What he can do is sell, build relationships, create content, and grind through the business side longer than almost anyone else. That combination is the whole story. Listen to the full conversation for how he breaks it down.

Raising Kids in a Social Media World

Peter and I have kids the same ages, and we spent a good stretch of this conversation talking about what social media is doing to the next generation. Peter has a perspective on it that I had not heard before — partly because he runs twenty social media channels himself and partly because his kids grew up watching him do it. The tension between using these platforms for business and protecting your children from the worst parts of them is something every parent in this industry deals with. Peter's take on it is honest and worth hearing in his own words.

Sixteen Hours a Day, Sunday to Sunday

I always appreciate when someone in this business is honest about what the work actually looks like. Peter did not sugarcoat it. He described nights editing until 2 AM, Uber Eats deliveries where the driver commented on his sweatpants, and weekends where he did not leave his apartment for two straight days. The moment where his laundry buzzer went off in the middle of our conversation and he started talking about his towel strategy might be my favorite thirty seconds of this entire episode. Press play for that one alone.

Final Thoughts From Me

Peter Miller is one of those people who figured out early that talent alone does not get you where you want to go. He paired fishing ability with salesmanship, modeling income with tournament entry fees, and hustle with a genuine warmth that makes people want to work with him. I see a lot of myself in the way he thinks about this industry, and I think anyone trying to build something — whether it is a fishing show, a charter business, or anything else — will get something real out of this conversation.

I am glad Peter sat down with me for this one. The article gives you the topics. Peter gives you the stories, the energy, and the laundry buzzer moment. None of that translates to text.
