Tom Rowland Podcast Episode 759 is a solo episode where I dig into regenerative agriculture, grass-finished beef, and sustainable farming after spending time at Ramstead Ranch. I explain the difference between grass-fed and grass-finished beef that trips up most shoppers, what regenerative agriculture actually means for the land, why grass-finished beef costs more, and the nutritional case for choosing it. This one is about understanding where good food really comes from.

In this solo episode, I walk through what I learned about regenerative agriculture and grass-finished beef after visiting Ramstead Ranch. I cover the difference between grass-fed and grass-finished, what regenerative farming means, the cost question, and the nutritional case for grass-finished beef.
Grass-fed means the cattle ate grass at some point, but many grass-fed cattle are still finished on grain before slaughter. Grass-finished means the animal ate only grass and forage for its entire life, right through finishing. That distinction is the one most consumers miss, and it changes both how the animal is raised and the nutritional profile of the beef.
Regenerative agriculture is a farming approach focused on rebuilding soil health, supporting biodiversity, and working with natural systems rather than depleting them. I explain how a ranch like Ramstead uses livestock and grazing practices to improve the land over time instead of degrading it.
I lay out the nutritional case for grass-finished beef, including the differences that come from an animal eating only grass and forage for its whole life. Beyond nutrition, I talk about how regenerative practices affect the quality of the food and the health of the land it comes from.
Grass-finished beef takes longer to raise and requires more land and management, which is reflected in the price. I explain why that higher cost connects directly to how the cattle are raised and why I think it is worth understanding what you are actually paying for.

I recorded this one solo because what I saw at Ramstead Ranch genuinely changed how I think about the food I buy. I have spent my life paying attention to where fish and game come from, but I had never thought as hard about beef. The difference between grass-fed and grass-finished, and the whole idea of farming in a way that actually heals the land, was eye-opening. I wanted to share it directly rather than wait for the right guest.

I explain what drew me to Ramstead Ranch and what I went there to understand about how good beef is actually produced. It set up everything else in this episode. Hear it in the episode.
This is the part most people get wrong at the grocery store. I break down why grass-fed and grass-finished are not the same thing and why the difference matters. Listen to that section of the episode.

I lay out why an animal finished entirely on grass produces different beef, and why I think it is worth the higher price. Worth hearing in full.

What stayed with me from Ramstead is how much intention goes into doing it right. Regenerative farming is harder and slower, and you can taste and trace the difference.
The grass-fed versus grass-finished distinction is the one I want everyone to walk away with. Once you understand it, you read labels differently forever.
